BAGGAGE CLAIM

In the framework of the minor Visual Culture(s) at WdKA, the students designed “ruins” which while serving as a testimony of the present were imagined to be excavated by archeologists of the Post/Future. The project was initiated and guided by The Ansible Institute

In the course of thie project, I examined the implications of backpack travel in their relation to colonial ideologies. After assessing my own behaviour and beliefs as a backpack traveller as well as its correlations with the history of travel, I designed a tool in the language familiar to backpack travellers. I illustrated and produced a patch that show three depictions of travellers throughout time: the colonizer, the aristocrat on a Grand Tour and the present-day backpacker. The alignment of the characters take reference to the March of Progress, but it is really then, that one has to question the reality of evolution, of progress and improvement. It invites for self-reflection and further study into the references I am making.
